“IRONS SHARPENS IRON" 2013
Oil Painting for 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group
The intent of this piece is to memorialize the casualties sustained by Special Operations Task Force - East and select elements of 4th Battalion, 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne) during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM XVIII in Afghanistan. Deploying in January and conducting combat operations through October of 2012, these elements executed over 1,800 unilateral and partnered combat operations; killed 176 of the enemy in close combat; forged an enduring partnership with 2,100 Afghan Commandos and 150 Afghan Special Forces soldiers, and recruited, trained, and employed over 4,000 Afghan Local Police Guardians across the 15 provinces of eastern Afghanistan. Eighteen members of the unit were decorated for valor for their actions while under fire and another 15 Soldiers received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. In light of these significant contributions, the US Army recognized Special Operations Task Force - East with the Valorous Unit Award, the equivalent of the Silver Star.
